Whethan (Ft. Charli XCX) • "Love Gang"
Seventeen year old super producer Whethan finds songstress Charli XCX for the electronic single “love gang” released via Big Beat records. This marks Whethan's second release of 2017 since collaborating with Flux Pavilion and MAX for “Savage”. Whethan, a Chicago native, is largely known for his “XE3” remix which has garnered over 8 million plays since 2015. At the age of sixteen he became the youngest to produce a record for Australian EDM label Future Classic. Acquiring attention from electronic innovators and genre leaders such as Skrillex, Whethan has gone on to sign with Atlantic Records. Charli, also an affiliate of Atlantic meant a collaboration was inevitable.
As Whethan plasters sawtooth synths behind an array of laser like plucks, London’s Charli XCX serenades with a bright woozy delivery. As the title suggest “Love Gang” is a homage to the lovers in the street. A positive vibe nonetheless, but expressed as if love was an actual “gang”. “We be in the streets straight love shows banging, throwing up that love sign dope love slanging.” Her wordplay is interesting. “Hood like” vernacular through the lense of a pop singer. If a mini project between the two emerged, I wouldn’t be surprised to say the least. The duo show incomparable chemistry on this song.
