Chance The Rapper's First Trip To The Grammys Was Fruitful, Brings Home Three Awards
Music's biggest night turned out to be a pretty big night for Lil Chano from 79th as well. Making his first trip the the Grammy awards after fighting earlier in the year to have free streaming music considered for the awards, Chance came up big in all the right categories. While his work on Kanye's Life of Pablo wasn't recognized with an award, Chance did bring home awards for Best Rap Performance for "No Problem", Best New Artist, and Best Rap Album for Coloring Book beating out Drake, Khaled, Schoolboy Q, De La Soul and Kanye West.
We had all the faith in the world that Chancelor Bennett would collect a couple throughout the night, but being awarded three Grammys last night for his third mixtape was a monumental feat and near best case scenario. During his first trip to the podium, Chance followed through on a promise he made to his friends back in Chicago, giving all the glory to God and accepting the award in the name of the Lord. Chance's faith has a firm place in how he operates day to day and how he approaches his music, it only seems right to shoutout the big man first. Fending off the pressure to wrap up his speech, Chance says to the powers that be, "I'm gonna talk, Y’all can play the music if you want." Chance carried on to thank his parents, Peter Cottontale, his manager Pat and or course Chicago.
Throughout the evening, Chance named a bunch of people that have influenced and helped him along this incredible journey, including the Harold's Chicken on 87th. After winning the award for Best Rap Album, Chance responded legitimately surprised to have taken home the W in the category. "I didn't think that we were going to get this one, so I don't have cool stuff to say this time" said Chance, but followed up that statement with a compelling sentiment directed toward the independent music community.
Capping the already eventful evening, Chance was one of the final performances of last night and he brought gospel sensation Kirk Franklin and singer Tamela Mann to join him for "How Great" and "All We Got", both fitting songs to summarize this incredible DYI story. Heading straight from the Staples Center, Chance reunited with lots of friends and family making it a true Chicago affair, celebrating the city that he's had on his back all these years. We look forward joining that celebration and welcoming home the Grammy Award Winning Chance The Rapper this week. Hopefully we catch a glimpse of those little gold gramophones very soon.
