Mungion • Scary Blankets
Mungion is an exciting new progressive jam band bubbling out of Chicago into the national circuit. Scary Blankets marks the band's debut after just a year of touring and writing music together. Mungion features former members of Chicago bands The Coop and whysowhite, among many other side projects. The band has gained significant recognition over the last year following the group's series of studio jam sessions on Facebook that proceeded to go viral. One watch and it's obvious why music fans took to the group so quickly.
Mungion shows clear technical talent but gives off a funk that smells of genuine passion and good-humored bravado. The most notable video (see below) is for the track "Schvingo" which feels even fresher on the studio release (the record was produced by whysowhite guitarist Chris Miller). The instrumentation throughout the album is a clear highlight, but moments of vocal goodness shine through from Justin Reckamp who also absolutely shreds on lead guitar. Bassist Sean Carolan provides heavy thick grooves throughout the record, even showcasing his abilities on the stand up bass on the entertaining jazz number "Scrambled Legs." Keyboard player Joe Re's presence on the album is heavily felt and his abilities bring every track on the record up a notch. Plain and simple, this record is fun and is the perfect soundtrack to any outdoor BBQ this Summer. This album will only further cement Mungion's presence in their respective live show circuit.
Scary Blankets is available on iTunes, Spotify, Bandcamp and Soundcloud.
Mungion (and friends!) will perform at a sold out Phish 'After Party' at the Tonic Room on Friday, June 24th.
