Emily Blue • Aperture

We’re thrilled to premiere the latest single from Chicago artist Emily Blue titled “Aperture.” The track continues Blue’s mastery of an ethereal sound - making perfect ambient pop. We had a chance to connect with Emily and the track’s producer Uuskhy to talk about their new song in our exclusive Q&A. Push play and take a look through the track’s photoshoot and lyrics below.

TD: Tell us how “Aperture” came together and who is apart of it.

Emily Blue: 'Aperture' is a collaboration between me and my awesome friend Joey who's project name is Uuskhy-- we've been friends for years and have been making art together for a long while. I originally wrote this song on piano and let it come out in a very natural, stream of consciousness way, and then brought it to him and he created this beautiful landscape around it.

TD: Could you tell us more about the feelings and writing process behind it?

Emily Blue: I wrote this song because of a very complicated and painful situation-- I had fallen for someone who already had a partner, and this song was my way of processing all the feelings surrounding that. While writing this I realized my own self-destructive tendencies and also come to terms with the fact that maybe it's not meant to be. So, in that way, it is a really personal song to me and I enjoyed the truths I discovered from this piece. I actually played the song for the person I wrote it about, and that in itself was a very cathartic release. I felt I could finally let go and reevaluate what the relationship really was.

TD: Hey Uuskhy! What was your process on the production of this collaboration?

Uuskhy: Throughout the song, I aimed to create a sound-world underneath Emily's vocals that was cohesive and supportive, yet always changing. As a fun throwback, I chose a synth patch left from an earlier project I had with Emily and recorded a variety of takes with slightly different variations of that patch. From those takes, I cut together a composite harmonic layer replete with timbral transformation.

TD: What are ways we can share to support you during this arts crisis because of COVID-19?

Emily Blue: You can support me by donating to my personal fund on my Spotify profile, streaming the song on all platforms, purchasing on my BandCamp, and following me on Instagram.

“Aperture” is available for streaming now on Spotify. Listen to the track on Soundcloud below.

LYRICS:

Out along the silver shore

We stood naked in the night

held my face inches from yours

Kiss me 'til the morning

My shape is putty in your hands

By the way, I love you so bad it hurts

You'll never leave your woman out in the cold

But I

Carved my face in gold

Who knows, who knows?

Maybe I'll carve it right next to yours

You'll never know, will you ever know?

The beach looks starving in winter

Wide awake, I notice the aperture

My light pours in

Just like I always let it

All Photos by Morgan Paije

But I lost my weight in gold

Just to set it at your door

Who knows? Maybe I have something that you need

That you can't let go of

No matter what you're told,

Who knows?

How, how, how,

How, how, how

Long, til I wear it out

and I tear it down

til I wear it out

and I tear it down

Who knows how deep,

Who knows how shallow

These roots are (in the ground)

You're losing weight, I'm losing sleep

No one's overthrown
