Sylvan LaCue (Ft. Saba) • "Best Me (Remix)"
Sylvan LaCue's "Best Me" has been one of my favorite tracks as of late, and I've been a fan of Saba for some time now. LaCue's original single nails the sentiment that defines what the day-to-day motions of self-growth feel like. He takes the mantra we've imposed on ourselves time and again - and elongates that thought into a beautifully paced stream of conciousness. Herein lies the main difference between the original and the remix. In the original, somebody takes a breath.
I went as far as to time this out. In the remix, Saba raps from the very start straight through 1:15, speeding up the pace of the single significantly. The flow we hear from him here maintains the standard of excellence we've come to expect, and I definitely enjoy it on its own merit. However, because the original track is one I've grown incredibly fond of, I can't help but feel that the new lyricism overrides the same beat a little too heavily. By the time we reach Slyvan's new verse, it's clear that Saba fever has caught on. It's not a bad thing, but the pauses of the original gave me time to think about what being the "Best Me" actually meant. Personal opinion aside, this track is sure to have fans of both Sylvan and Saba going crazy.
