Jamila Woods has been having a great year so far. She kickstarted the year with the single “blk girl soldier” alongside a signing to independent label Closed Sessions. Then in February, she was our cover story feature, later followed by collaborations alongside Macklemore and even appearing on SNL with Chance the Rapper for "Sunday Candy" as well as on Jimmy Fallon with Chance for his new song “Blessings”. Now, keeping momentum at full force, she gives us “HEAVN”, a song which reworks The Cure's "Just Like Heaven" and features production from The Roots' song “Eve” off of their tribute Dilla Joints album. In case you were wondering what Jamila Woods sounds like over Questlove drums paying tribute to Dilla? Yeah, it's as fire as you imagine. In an email to Fader, she explains, "I thought about stories of black love in slavery times, how my ancestors had the audacity to love in spite of trauma and violence waged against them. The song became an ode to that history and a call to choose love in spite of the storms we weather.” Press play to hear a beautiful love song, one complimented by the undeniably strong yet simple artwork.
