Premiere • Logan Cage: "Innocent"
In the grand scheme of things, the career of Logan Cage (formerly just Logan) has been a short one. At just over two years in length, most aspiring musicians struggle with the hurdles along the way. Not to say that Logan hasn't paid his dues, he has and continues to do so, but he's also leaps an bounds ahead of many of his peers. From the jump Logan has commanded a strong cult following on Chicago's south side, and following his debut release 1636 last year, the emcee has positioned himself nicely for another milestone of a year with the help of new music and a new project on the way.
With his sophomore project Today and Tomorrow dropping sometime this year, Logan Cage kicks things off on a lighter note with "Innocent", a song tackling a subject that Logan hasn't often addressed in his music, relationships. Logan goes into what inspires his creative process and plenty more in a recent conversation we had. Catch up on that and more below while you take in "Innocent".
UPDATE: Logan has released three new tracks total from his new project Today and Tomorrow.
Even before you released your highly anticipated debut 1636, you seemed to have a strong local following. What do you attribute the buzz to?
I think it comes from a strong foundation and a strong connection between the fans and the music. They just feel and relate to the music.
With an album and EP under your belt now, are you approaching the release of Today and Tomorrow differently? What are some new influences this time around?
Making and releasing 1636 was a dope experience and I learned a lot. I'm definitely approaching Today And Tomorrow differently. 1636 was pure raw talent. This next project is more polished and people will hear the chemistry between me and Flight and our growth since the first tape. So Iconic was fun, and it also taught me a lot. Things were weird for us at the time lol... This time around I was influenced heavily by The Beatles and like 90s and early 2000s hip hop and R&B. Of course we put our twist to things. I think the project is very dope.
In 2015, you and Flight released a lot of new music, much of it was pretty personal. Are we going to continue to get a lot of that in the new album? Is there any reoccurring theme to this project?
I hate music that I can't feel. My first project was really personal and it was more for me to get off my chest as opposed to get a deal or something. This project is also personal but in a different way. I think you'll feel me when you hear the music. And it just sounds better. I can't really put it into a lane because it's so diverse. There's strong vibes throughout the project though and a lot of feeling.
How would you say have you grown since 1636?
I would say I've grown more in real life as an overall person since the release. I been through a lot of shit but my craft has improved as well. From songwriting to actually spitting bars I can say I've improved. Of course I always have confidence but the music will speak for itself. I'm kinda figuring out how to use my voice in more ways too.
When we listened to 1636 at Classick before it was released, I remember you commenting on how "One Night Stand" was the one song on that project that had anything to do with the women in your life, but today you're kicking off the Today and Tomorrow campaign with a track about relationship woes. Tell us about "Innocent", and why you chose to lead with this single.
The listening session at Classicks was dope as hell. I specifically remember me talking about "One Night Stand" haha. But yeah there was another song on 1636 called "Breathe" which is in that category. When I write my music I just write my emotions and my feelings literally. If I'm goin through shit with a girl then that's what I'm gunna make a song about. If I just got paid for a show and went out and partied I'll make a song about that. If I'm dealing with a loss of a loved one I'll write about that. It's all based off emotion. The whole sound. EVERYTHING. Today And Tomorrow is almost a blend of my life. I didn't wanna focus on one mood. Flight did a great job with the production. We made almost every song together in the studio. Wrote and produced with each other. "Innocent" is the first song I'm releasing because it reminds me of "old Logan" or whatever my fans call it lol. But it's just a song about a girl. I have a few of those from different perspectives on the project. The greatest part is that none of the production sounds the same. Every track deserves to be seen in its own light. I hope the fans enjoy the music and appreciate it. There's so much more coming. We're just tryna bring real music back and give it real feeling. The #gang #gang shit is cool lol but we like to make good music. #Tnt
Are there any more Today and Tomorrow details you can fill us in on at this time?
I can tell you there won't be many features but I have been in the studio and plan on gettin in the studio with some of my friends in the scene and create so we'll see what happens. Other than that I can guarantee a unique and diverse project. I think it's dope how we make it cohesive but it doesn't sound the same. Today And Tomorrow will be out sooner than later and we have big plans.
