Chance the Rapper & Francis The Lights • "Dear Theodosia"
It's been impossible to keep Chance the Rapper out of the headlines this year. Never having been a fan of the sites that will run posts the second Kanye sneezes or A$AP Rocky steps outside, we aren't chasing clicks when it comes to coverage of Chicago's most notable young musician. However, we easily could sustained a weekly column this year dedicated to listing Chance's multiple accomplishments in that seven day span. Many times, he in a single day achieved milestones that would highlight a whole year for many artists - i.e. orchestrating a concert in Grant Park that led thousands of Chicagoans to the polls to vote for the presidential election just hours after seeing his single "No Problem" #1 on radio, becoming one of the only independent artists to ever do so.
Yesterday marked another one of those days for Mr. Bennett as he yet again found himself at The White House. This time performing, alongside the social experiment and Jamila Woods, for a small crowd which included the President of the United States. That evening, the soundtrack to one of the biggest musicals of this generation, Hamilton, was released and it featured a heartfelt collaboration between Chance and Francis & the Lights. The two artists have really managed to bring the best out of each other this year between the Coloring Book stand out "Summer Friends" and a full on fall tour together. In addition to Chance, the Hamilton soundtrack also includes fellow Chicagoan Common & a whole slew of incredibly talented musicians The Roots, Alicia Keys, Nas, Usher, Sia and more.
