Words by Allen Hotchkiss

St. Louis has given Chicago a lot of musical gifts and Al Cheekz is definitely one of them. The young rapper/producer has recently released “Spend It,” an up-tempo disco-trap project that combines elements of classic funk grooves with modern day hip-hop beats. It’s not easy trying to come up in the music industry, especially in the Midwest, but Al assures us that he’s only focused on the money and the work. With a little help from Nana B, this track feels like a celebration of the sacrifices and hard work the young creatives have put in over the years. Now with a few labels starting to get on board, it’d be easy for Al to get distracted but “Spend It” showcases his drive to invest in himself and capitalize on his current situation.

With a vibe that makes me think of Anderson Paak, this track could be the first one you hear when you wake up or the one that closes out a long night at the club. Either way, this tune is definitely worth a listen. Stream “Spend It” above and check out These Days for more on the talented Al Cheekz!
