Looking Ahead • Orbit Series @ Subterranean 10/29
The very first Orbit Series comes to the Subterranean this Thursday featuring three Midwest artists. Kweku Collins holds it down of Chicago, Webster X waves the flag from Milwaukee and MaLLy has got Minneapolis/St. Paul proudly saying his name. Each artist will headline their respective hometown while championing their fellow Midwest brethren.
MaLLy has been hyperactive in the Twin Cities music scene for the past several years with both his past two releases The Colors of Black and The Last Great... landing on year-end "Best of" lists in the Twin Cities. Most of 2015 has MaLLy tackling guest features as he prepares for new music of his own. The clear seasoned veteran of the line-up, MaLLy packs a punch. His live show with producer/DJ Last Word is polished up and confidently delivered. A 40+ date national tour with Brother Ali last year leaves no room for a weak live show. MaLLy's live set, stage presence and catalog of bangers is not to be missed.
Webster X has a charisma on and off the stage that you just can't keep your eyes off of. A face that's putting Milwaukee on the map, is becoming much more familiar to those in Chicago. You can count on one thing during Web's show, he'll probably be out in the crowd rapping, jumping and dancing right there with you. His shows are passionate, raw and full of energy. Web has the potential to be one of those acts that blows up overnight. All the momentum we've seen behind the MKE artist is from just a handful of singles. Just wait until you hear what he has in-store for listeners next because the next time you see him just might be with a much, much bigger crowd.
Is this Kweku Collin's biggest hometown stage to date? Headlining the SubT is a early benchmark many of Chicago's acts need notched into their belt. Kweku should have no problem shining in front of his hometown. His label Closed Sessions is passionately behind him and his Summer 2015 release Say it Here, While It's Safe still holding strong into the Fall. He's earned the respect of the local hip-hop scene's inner circle. Personally, I've seen him comfortably rock some small, unusual and intimate spaces without breaking a sweat. Now it's time for Kweku's to hit bigger and better stages in an effort to keep the spotlight on Chicago. At only 18-years old...so far, so good.
Expect to see producer/DJ Boathouse (born Chicago, raised in Minneapolis) spinning some tunes earlier in the night too.
